Hockey Helps the Homeless is an event that takes place in several cities across Canada and each event donates 100% of the funds raised to local charities.  In KW, we raise funds for One Roof, Lutherwood, House of Friendship and the YW Emergency Shelter.

For the past 5 years, I have played in the Kitchener-Waterloo Hockey Helps the Homeless Tournament.  Growing up as an avid hockey player and fan, I initially saw this tournament as a great opportunity to get out with some buddies and play with some ex-NHLers to hear what it was like to play as a pro.  I soon found out that the tournament is about a great deal more than that.  Every year at the tournament dinner, one of the 4 charities who benefit from the funds raised will have someone who used their support get up and speak to the crowd.  Talk about an eye opener.  At my first dinner, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house and it was easy to see how positive an impact our fundraising was making.  We were changing lives for the better in our community.

This year, FaithLife Financial took on the challenge to sponsor a team for the tournament. A family friend who also happened to play in the OHL, helped us to secure 3 ex-OHL hockey players to join our team and assist in our fundraising efforts.  This year Ben Fanelli, Derek Shoenmakers and Zach Lorentz, who played together on the Kitchener Rangers, all laced them up with the FaithLife Financial All Stars. This was a great treat for our team and for our fans!  And speaking of fans, we had over 30 of our Head Office employees come out to cheer us on during our games – making us feel very proud to play for such a wonderful community cause.

At our Head Office, we focused our yearly Thanksgiving Action Team initiatives on raising funds for this community event.  In addition to the $2,500 we donated as a company sponsorship, our employees raised another $1,200. And after individual team player fundraising, the total contributed was $12,300 – contributed from FaithLife Financial and our All Stars team!  In total, the KW Hockey Helps the Homeless Tournament raised $260,000 this year for a total of $1,040,000 over the 6 years that the tournament has run!  Personally, I have raised over $11,000 over the 5 years I have participated and making this kind of impact in my local community is what keeps me coming back every year. This was a very successful Action Team event and I look forward to building on it with our staff each October in the years to come. It is a privilege to Live generously NOW with my colleagues at FaithLife Financial to support our community through Hockey Helps the Homeless!
