President's Message - What's your verse?

Karen_Presidents_Message.jpgI recently saw Apple’s latest commercial where concepts from the 1989 movie Dead Poets Society are presented through the Apple lens. It’s an artistic rendition around why humans read and write poetry – casually aligned with how the iPad is being used in music, film, mountain climbing, scuba diving and more.

Apple’s question to the world, “What will your verse be?” is brought to us as a result of Robin Williams’ “Carpe Diem” speech from the film, where English teacher John Keating inspires his students to embrace poetry and to seize the day. On an emotive level, Apple is appealing to the philosophy that, “Each of us has something to share. A voice, a passion, a perspective – the potential to add a stanza to the world’s story.”

The Bible mentions salt 40 times. Perhaps the best known reference is Matthew 5:13, when Christ, in His Sermon on the Mount, says, “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.”

Just as salt flavors the food we eat, as Christians we can flavor the world and the communities in which we live with our actions and our words. I think of the tremendous generosity demonstrated by FaithLife Financial’s Chapter Members following last year’s natural disasters in Alberta and the Philippines. I think of the efforts you and your churches are making in your own communities this year. I think of how you have protected your families with life insurance.  Christians personify the seasoning quality of salt when they make life better for the people around them. By exemplifying Christian financial principles, we are the salt that builds a better world.

Kindness, compassion and encouragement are valuable flavor enhancements for your life’s verse. As food for thought and as a poignant moment in the Apple commercial, Robin Williams’ voice challenges listeners with, “The powerful play goes on and you contribute a verse. What will your verse be?”
